Time to stock more tuna?

Our Costco carries 6 oz. tuna for .87/can, but I'm noticing more grocery stores carrying 5 oz. cans now (of course for a higher price too). I wonder how long Costco will continue to have the 6 oz, or if they too will eventually go to 5 oz?

Well, Costco now carries 7 oz. cans of tuna! .91/can; I was pleasantly surprised.

ice cream used to be half a gallon, now it's 1.5 or 1.75 depending on brand.

Price remains the same though....

If you live in UK, yeah it might be time....

Question is, is US's turn far behind?

You missed the BIG tuna sale about a year ago.

Target had tuna for .20 a can using an online coupon.

I printed 50 coupons and went shopping.:565:

Re: Time to stock more tuna?

Years ago, tuna used to come in 7 oz. cans, not 6 or 5 oz. Before long it will be 3.5 oz. In addition, the quality of tuna in the can had declined. "Chunk" tuna today is now mostly tiny flakes of tuna that used to be used in cat food, and most "solid" tuna today is what Chunk tuna was years ago.

If they put that nasty stuff in smaller bottles they're doing you a favor.

They put less tuna in the cans in order to make room for the mercury.

Mercury is heavier than tuna, so the cans can be smaller.

Tuna is something good to stock up on. I wonder how long it lasts in the can?

I have gone on Tuna buying binges before. High in protein low in fat. Can't go wrong with Tuna as a staple food. Good with rice, good with beans, good with a bunch of other stuff too.

I've been buying cans of Sockeye Salmon, on sale in Canadian Wal*Mart stores with a Best before date of Jun 2014 so I figure that's a good enough time line for me...

I always keep lots of canned tuna and salmon around, about 100 cans of each and cycle through it. Sucks that it went down to 5oz cans.

I noticed that the last time I was making tuna salad. I bought chunk tuna and it wasn't chunks at all, like it used to be, rather it was slivers in mostly water. What the heck gives?

I assumed it was because I bought Bumble Bee instead of Chicken of the Sea, but if they've all gone that way I'm going to be pretty frustrated.

Costco has had some good sales on wild Alaskan salmon. I buy lots of that for storage.

Buy and store Chlorella tablets to eat when you consume tuna. The Chlorella is a mercury magnet and will help you pass it.

Sunny D is absolute crap ....It's nothing more than High Fructose corn syrup that's never seen an orange in it's life..

Lets hope the bottle sizes continue to diminish .. It will do you a favour !!

I just noticed the 5 oz. cans at the local Albertson. The only thing left in 6 oz. was Bumblebee tuna. You could see that people were buying up the Bumblebee because of it being 6 oz. I am gonna have to make some rounds and stock up on 6 oz. Tuna before everything is 5 oz.

I wonder if Costco is big enough to specify 6 oz for their orders, or do they have no say in the matter? I see plenty of other "Costco only" packages of stuff that you can't find in a regular store (and no, not the Costco 'Kirkland' stuff).

I just got back from Wally World--6 oz cans of their brand @ .74 a can.

I remember last summer it was around .60 a can

Thanks for the report. Did you buy any? How is the tuna? It's their house brand/label?

If you have not tried the canned chicken at Costco, it is IMO worth a try.
Tastes like tuna minus the fish, so I guess it tastes like chicken!

I bought a pack about a year ago and it repulsed me to even think about it for some reason. About a month ago I put a can in some chicken soup...good stuff.

Re: Time to stock more tuna?

I like their canned chicken for Chicken Salad (in a pinch). Very chunky. Typically I just try to make extra chicken breasts for the salad, but they never seem to last that long!

I doubt it... I checked out our local Sam's Club today and they had 5 oz. cans. :bawling:

You mean that the ration will be increased to 3.5 oz, don't you comrade?

Yes, its their house brand made by one of the big guys. I bought 12 cans.
I use it all the time--no different than the other canned tuna.

I bought a case of Chicken of the Sea Tuna from Costco a while back. I thought the taste was pretty poor for tuna in the can so I will not be buying anymore of that brand. I did eat through the whole case eventually.

I find the quality of canned tuna in oil, better than the water packed variety. Overall, the quality of canned tuna has gone downhill in the last few years. The stuff in pouches is much better, IMO, but I don't think it keeps anywhere near as long as cans.

The quality of canned salmon has decreased as well, IMO. Pretty disgusting stuff, similar to catfood.

Just so long it''s a good protein source with a minimum of toxic metals, I don't give a shite what kind of "tuna" it is... if it's cheap and I can live off it for a while, I'm good!

I'll get back to eating the real stuff after this all blows over... if I survive, that is!

Yup, Costco's brand is available in 7-ounce cans. They even had a story about it their monthly magazine.
